LESSONS IN DESIGN #01

surfaces_depthsIt’s pretty rare that I buy a photography book more for the design than the content – not to diminish Thomas Ruff’s truly astonishing body of work, but when I opened up the catalogue for his current exhibition Surfaces, Depths at the Kunsthalle Wien, I was almost shocked that an acknowledged perfectionist such as Ruff would allow the designers to print the catalogue entirely on newspaper. Of course, there is a connection to the recurring issue of reproduction in his work, but still, to accept a substantial loss of quality in the printing for the sake of a design concept is a brave act for a photographer. As so often, credits go to Cornel Windlin and Jonathan Hares for one of the most beautiful art books of the year. Chapeau.
