ADVENTURES IN PHOTOGRAPHY: HENRY ROY

I’ve been a devoted fan of Henry Roy’s photography for ages now. Looking at his recent (if highly overpriced, but I just couldn’t help purchasing it anyway…) book  Spirit at Gottlund Verlag just made me even more excited about the surely imminent spring, for Roy always manages to capture a certain warmth in his images, [...]

IT’S A BOOK IT’S A STAGE

In the second installment of their independent publishing fair running parallel to the official Leipzig book fair, our friends at Spector have once again invited a selection of publishers of more than worthwhile printed ephemera to present their combined efforts in the spectacular foyer of the Central Theater in Leipzig, tomorrow.
We’ll not be present ourselves [...]

Winning Numbers

It is unimportant to me whether anyone reads these poems / or their assessment of them should they, I do not care under / whose name they are published, nor could I care less what / literary critics say about them, praise or condemnation, / nothing could be more vapid than some academic advanc- / [...]

RANDOM REASONS FOR REJECTION

Don’t we know them all, those polite letters saying no? Thank you for… Unfortunately… We will get in touch if… We wish you all the best… But with a letter like this, how could you possibly feel offended?
(Thanks, Andrew)

MONO.CONTRIBUTORS #02: BERND KUCHENBEISER

Time to pick up a thread that got lost along the way, in terms of presenting some of our valued contributors without whom mono.kultur would not be possible. Namely Bernd Kuchenbeiser, our designer and interviewer for our current issue featuring ECM’s founder Manfred Eicher. Bernd had been on our list of designers we’ve been wanting [...]

VIRGINITY IN SWANSEA

Brilliant comedian Richard Ayoade directed his first film called Submarine. Will be released in the UK this Friday, March 18, 2011. The German release isn’t scheduled yet. Yesterday’s Guardian featured an interview with him and here’s a trailer.

BOATS AND SAXOPHONES

Good saxophone music is hard to find. Just like nice boats. If you’re near Barcelona try this:
DUETS NIGHT
What could be finer than a relaxing evening calmly swaying to live music and the sea onboard a classic wooden boat? The first DUETS NIGHT is coming with fine musicians including Tom Chant on Saxophone, playing with a [...]

KRAUTROCK REINVENTED

We’ve always enjoyed Berlin’s experimental super group Groupshow – consisting of Jan Jelinek, Andrew Pekler and Hanno Leichtmann – with their semi-improvised organic sets. Here’s another return to the stage, this time featuring Damo Suzuki, the enigmatic vocalist of Krautrock pioneers Can. Sounds good to us.

ALTERNATIVES IN PRINT: PORT

Another man’s style magazine might not exactly be something the world has been waiting for, especially after the flurry of new titles swimming in the shadow of Fantastic Man’s surprising success. But when I saw the list of people involved at Port magazine – Dan Crowe and Matt Willey from the short-lived but outstanding literary [...]

DRAWING HERSELF OUT OF DEBT

Kate Bingaman-Burt was born in Wisconsin, in the late 70’s. Having been to art school she acquired her credit card which she used, slightly out of control, to purchase all sorts of objects (needed and not needed) for the next few years. Shortly after having finished her graduation, she find out she was due several [...]
