Tim and Eric’s first feature length production Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie premiered on this year’s Sundance festival. This is the plot summary: Tim and Eric are given a billion dollars to make a movie by the Schlaaang corporation, but waste it. Their lives at stake, the guys skip town in search of a way to pay the money back.

One of my favourite magazines out there at the moment is the UK based film magazine Little White Lies which has been around since 2005. Each issue of Little White Lies is themed around a single cover film, inspiring the design and editorial content of the entire issue.

On the cover they always feature an illustration of the lead actor of its cover film. The cover film also influences interior aspects, such as editorial icons, chapter headings and custom typefaces. However, the overall template of the magazine remains the same. The current issue is about Steve McQueen’s Shame. Their system of evaluation stands out from other magazines with the categories “Anticipation”, “Enjoyment” and “In Retrospect” really getting the gist across. Everyone seems to be doing a fashion film these days, and we’ve been mostly pretty disappointed with what we’ve seen so far. But since complaining is one of our bad habits, we thought we’ll just make our own – as far away as possible from being a fashion film, of course. So here it is, our first cautious steps into motion for our Autumn/Winter 2011 collection with mono.gramm.

Never change a winning team, David Fincher must have thought, when he invited our third cover star Trent Reznor, with Atticus Ross, to pen the soundtrack for his inevitable adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, after winning the Oscar for best soundtrack with Social Network. In suitably heavy-handed mode, with Karen O lending some guest vocals.

A Touch of Evil

Having answered ‘Every day.’ to that question of David Milch, actor John Hawkes landed the role of the jewish merchant Sol Star in genius HBO series Deadwood. He’s been in Miranda July’s Me and You and Everyone We Know and was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in Winter’s Bone. Films he’s in are frequently lined up in the Sundance Film Festival competition, this year it will be Ben Levin’s The Surrogate.

We’ve discussed photographers and artists who use Google Street View before, but a novel project that pushes past those previous appropriations, Aaron Hobson’s cinemascapes is worth a look. Hobson isn’t interested in Street View’s potential for reaching documentary truthfulness, or in the bizarre compositions it captures, or in the visual texture of its pixelation; he creates cinematic compositions that hinge on how we perceive our every day life through the lens of film, TV, video games, and other visual pop. Hobson’s Street Views are like film stills grabbed from sun-kissed romances, stormy thrillers, gritty urban dramas, or nutty Irish comedies; they are a new and engaging use of what is fast becoming an important photographic tool.

The 14-minute-film is going to have its premiere on Sunday, followed by an interview with the artist by Hans-Ulrich-Obrist.

The first event will take place this upcoming thursday, November 24th at 9 pm. The movie which will be screened is to remain a secret until you arrive, as this event is not as much about the movie itself as it is about the experience of leaving the cold outside and watching a movie with your friends in the dark, exactly as we used to do when we were kids. Therefore, the event is free. The only price you have to pay to join, is to bring your own favorite and most comfortable pillow to sit on! You can RSVP in the event Facebook page.

Speaking of productivity, in the same mail, McSweeney’s also mentioned not only the second issue of their food magazine Lucky Peach in collaboration with David Chang, the guy I fell in love with in the second season of David Simon’s Treme, where he, Chang, plays the coolest of all chefs. Little did I know that he actually is a chef in real life, and, judging from the first issue of Lucky Peach, just as cool as on TV. But no, they, McSweeneys that is, also announced the launch of Grantland, yet another new magazine, this time about, exactly, sports. And who would have thought the famed issue of McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern #33, in form of a newspaper, would bear so many pretty fruit?

Yet on another side note, below are the items Miranda July bought last winter, when she finished the sound for The Future, in Berlin. If you want to know why, then you might or might not be able to find out, and some other useful advice on life in Berlin, here. Presumably it’s meant as a roundabout way of saying that The Future will be released in late October in Germany, in this particularly charming way that only Miranda July knows how.
