I mean, we all know that Scandinavians appreciate a drink or five, but in terms of food, well… But not Finland, oh no, they are something like the France of Scandinavia when it comes to culinary delights (I’m serious, and just in two words: Reindeer Sashimi). So it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Finns would be the inventors of a treat that is called Restaurant Day. The idea is simple: You open your own restaurant – for a day. You choose the location – your home, your mom’s office, a rooftop – and your menu – vicious omelettes, killer cakes, vodka pickles – and voilà, off you go.

Restaurant Day happens about every three months, and has spread from Helsinki to over 50 different cities worldwide, boasting more than 300 restaurants within just one year. And yes, Restaurant Day is about to happen again, this Saturday, May 19 (and there is still time to sign up). It has even been imported to Berlin, albeit only in one spot so far: the tempting-sounding Blick Burger in Neukölln, on a private balcony with a beautiful Blick over, erm, Neukölln.

We’re all looking forward to those Sundays spent in the park, chilling, sunbathing and reading a book (while we strongly fear another Summer like last year’s one). But that’s not happening, at least for this Sunday. So we better make the best out of what we’re left with (which is still pretty good) and celebrate the joys of living (or passing by, at the moment) in a city such as Berlin. This weekend we suggest you Slow Travel Berlin’s event ‘A Celebration of Creativity, Culture & Cuisine‘, taking place at historical market Markthalle IX, where a series of good stuff is happening. From outside organized tours to the inside Locavore food market or the Lounge (where you can visit Portable Book Fair Berlin #03, among other things), the readings, workshops and concerts, there’s a complete schedule to please the whole family.

Conflict Kitchen is a take-out restaurant that only serves cuisine from countries that the United States is in conflict with. The food is served out of a take-out style storefront, which rotates identities every 6 months to highlight another country. Each Conflict Kitchen iteration is augmented by events, performances, and discussion about the culture, politics, and issues at stake with each county we focus on. We are currently presenting the third iteration of Conflict Kitchen via La Cocina Arepas, an Venezuelan take-out restaurant that serves homemade arepas, grilled corncakes served to order with a variety of fresh fillings. Developed in collaboration with members of the Venezuelan community, our arepas come packaged in a custom-designed wrapper that includes interviews with Venezuelans both in Venezuelan and the United States on subjects ranging from Venezuelan food and culture to issues of geopolitics.

This is my new favourite cookbook, recently published by Phaidon – The Family Meal. It is the first home cooking cookbook by the world-renowned chef, Ferran Adrià. The simple, seasonal recipes are based on the staff menu from elBulli. I love the layout and photography and Ferran even provides the ingredient amounts for each recipe according to how many people you’re cooking for – for 2, for 6, for 20 and even for 75! – not that I ever dream of wanting to cook for 75! I am, however, looking forward to trying out some of the recipes soon!
