Anyway, what a nice way to warm up for the daunting New Year’s eve, in a decidedly odd manner: a sausage stand to our right, haystacks to our left, the ancient halls of Markthalle IX in front of us, Motto’s latest outpost in a pretty wooden shack behind us, Glühwein in hand and Chris Ware’s favourite ragtime tricks in our ears, and what more could we ask? A slightly odd night we wanted, a slightly odd night we got, in the most positive sense of the word. Thank you everyone for coming.

it’s been 2.5 years – and this is the moment where you are allowed to sigh, has it really been that long and doesn’t time fly? Well, yes, we think with 2012 in sight, we can safely say it does and every year a little faster – anyway, it’s been 2.5 years since we had the honour to inaugurate Motto’s Berlin store with the launch of our 20th issue. So it feels only appropriate to combine the launch of our 30th issue featuring the marvelous Chris Ware with the inauguration of yet another Motto Berlin space, more accurately its lovely little wooden outpost at Kreuzberg’s Markthalle IX, which we’re certain you will be hearing a lot more about in the coming year, with its measured reinvention as a local treasure in full progress.

And this being our 30th issue, what better date than to celebrate on the 30th of December, since this is one of our favourite times of the year, and any excuse to warm up for the following night’s celebrations is fine with us. Our friends at the pop-up bar Chez Icke will be serving hot drinks and good vibes, our favourite DJ Ute has stocked up on her ragtime catalogue to pay homage to master Ware’s favourite tunes, and of course, you will finally get to lay your hands and eyes on our latest effort, mono.kultur #30 indeed.

And so we say: Expect Ragtime! Expect Glühwein! Expect fun! Bring warm clothes! It’s the end of 2011! It’s the start of our 30s! Let’s celebrate!

it took us a little to nurse our hangovers from our launch party with the mighty boys of CANT on Wednesday night, and what a launch party it turned out to be – so after last year’s anniversary bash tragically cut short, we finally had our proper dance party all right. Thank you everyone for coming, thank you L.U.X. for hosting us, and thank you of course to Chris Taylor and the great guys at CANT who really got everyone going – and how could we not with the sight of all four of them bouncing behind and in front and above the DJ decks? In short: What a night.

More about the issue tomorrow, but what we really wanted to say is that we will have a little celebration next Wednesday at L.U.X. bar in Kreuzberg – since, as it happens, Chris Taylor will be in town and he wanted to play some music just for you.
A big thank you goes out to the Neue Nationalgalerie, who kindly opened their doors for us, to Marc Gloede for hosting the Q&A, and of course to Taryn Simon for spending the evening with us. We’re looking forward to the next occasion in four years’ time.

with American photographer Taryn Simon just having opened her new and breathtaking exhibition A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters at the venerable Neue Nationalgalerie, we really could not miss the opportunity to invite our cover star of issue #15 to share the many ideas and issues at heart of her latest series. It also served as a welcome excuse to finally reprint one of our favourite issues that has been long out of print, and since we like to do things properly, we will be launching it as an extended and special edition on the night.

Taryn Simon, in the meantime, will give a talk on her new work and the process behind it, followed by a Q&A hosted by Marc Glöde. And even better: the Neue Nationalgalerie kindly consented to host the talk in the foyer of their splendid premises, which will give you the opportunity to explore the wonderful exhibition not just in theory but in practice, until 22h. In short: what better way to spend a Thursday night, and we look forward to seeing you there.

it’s been a while since we last saw you, so we felt like we really should make the best of summer and invite you all over to some sonic BBQ extravaganza on the beautiful terrace of Based in Berlin in Monbijoupark. We’ll be celebrating our current issue with Ryan McGinley which has been out for a while, true, but hey, any excuse to get together is fine with us. The more the merrier, so we’ll be joined behind the turntables by our friends at Motto and indie arts magazine Larry’s presenting their latest issue as well. And of course, the exhibition at Based in Berlin will be open for some pre-terrace inspiration. So please join us for some fine music, fine art, fine drinks, fine print and fine summer.

We look forward to seeing you there,
