Having answered ‘Every day.’ to that question of David Milch, actor John Hawkes landed the role of the jewish merchant Sol Star in genius HBO series Deadwood. He’s been in Miranda July’s Me and You and Everyone We Know and was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in Winter’s Bone. Films he’s in are frequently lined up in the Sundance Film Festival competition, this year it will be Ben Levin’s The Surrogate.

Goods news for people with a high pain threshold: Ricky Gervais‘ and Stephen Merchant’s new comedy series Life’s Too Short is out. If you were able to laugh about Extras and The Office, it’s safe to recommend this new series to you. Life’s Too Short is about Warwick Davis, an actor who is 1,07 m short and his struggle with his dwarf agency, a soon to be ex-wife, a huge tax debt and all other kind of everyday problems to do with his rather short size.

A series of three feature films, Dreileben brings together three of Germany’s best and audacious directors, namely Christoph Hochhäusler, Dominik Graf and Christian Petzold. While the entire series is loosely based around the story of a murderer escaping prison in a small village in East Germany, each part tells a very different story against the same backdrop. While some characters and elements might be at the centre of one episode, they will only briefly make an appearance in the next. In the meantime, each episode has its own distinct rhythm and handwriting owed to the three directors. What’s more important: each episode is in its own way rather brilliant.

All three parts were screened last Monday in one full-evening marathon, but thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can catch up on them here – or you could, until yesterday. See, that’s German television for you: the good things never last.

Detectives Jimmy McNulty and Lester Freamon who love each other’s company are re-united as Iago and Othello at Sheffield Crucible from 15 September to 15 October.

Finally summer break is over. The first two episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 are very promising and at last, tonight Breaking Bad continues with its 4th season.

In case you haven’t heard of Peter Dinklage he’s well worth checking out. I first saw him in Tom DiCillio’s 1995 film Living in Oblivion, one of my all time favourites which I’ve watched about 30 times by now. Over the years Dinklage popped up in all kinds of good films, most famously maybe as the lead in The Station Agent (2003). Currently he’s starring in HBO’s Game of Thrones where he plays witty Tyrion Lannister, the queen’s brother, a friend of brothels and “cripples, bastards and broken things”.

It’s finally here! Chris Lilley’s highly anticipated television series Angry Boys made its world premiere television debut last Wednesday night on ABC TV Australia (with HBO and BBC to follow shortly). With Angry Boys, Lilley and his long-time producer, Laura Waters, resolved to take more chances. “There has to be some challenge with each series,” Waters says. “We need to feel like it’s impossible, or it’s not fun. We talked about taking everything to the next level.”

Writer/performer Chris Lilley is the chameleon of character invention and in Angry Boys he brings to life six vastly different characters – identical twins Daniel and Nathan Sims, who appeared in We Can Be Heroes, are back. Joining the boys in the series are four new characters; former surfing world champion Blake Oakfield, a family man and founding member of a surfie gang – the Mucca Mad Boys; S.mouse a U.S. rapper famous for having produced the biggest selling hip-hop single of all time; Japanese mother Jen Okazaki, a shrewd businesswoman, she also manages her son’s skateboarding career; and Juvenile Justice Centre for Boys officer Ruth Sims, aka Gran. Prepare to be entertained!
