Dear Friends,

it is becoming increasingly impossible to ignore: Christmas Season is upon us, and where did the year go? But just in time, we are immensely proud to present our latest installment of mono.editionen, in the form of one giant poster, by none other than Chris Ware.

Because it is precisely those questions – the passing of time, children growing, parents getting older, those inescapable and terrifying undercurrents of daily life – that no one can handle more gracefully than Chris Ware, capturing the larger and smaller issues of life in his inimitable tiny squares of hand drawn precision and beauty.

This story, without a title and in fact entirely without words, was first published as part of Chris Ware’s masterpiece Building Stories. We can literally feel days and months and years flying by, with past and present and future all merging into one, the relentless tide of time broken up only by memories of small moments that are as mundane as they are heartbreaking.

For this limited edition, the story is rearranged to an oversized poster (98 x 64 cm), undermining the flow of the storyline but emphasizing the synchrony of memory. Needless to say, it is utterly beautiful and available only here and now, from us, for you.

Have a splendid last few weeks of 2014 and enjoy,

Dear Friends,

as we’re busy preparing our forthcoming issue, we think it’s time to finally release a treat of an edition that we have held back for quite a while: as part of our crowdfunding campaign in 2012 for our first artist book, Echoes of Voices in the High Towers, our favourite Robert Montgomery kindly provided two of his beautiful billboard pieces in a highly limited edition of five each. As we still have a couple left, those are now available through our online store mono.konsum.

A grand 240 by 360 cm in size, the pieces come in three sheets of weather resisting billboard prints, and offer one poem each by Robert Montgomery that were presented as part of his project Echoes of Voices in the High Towers on advertising billboards in Berlin in 2012. Each piece is signed and numbered by the artist.

As we wrote at the time: ‘But while introducing poetry as sparkles of beauty into the public realm, presenting words as living part of our environment, Robert’s words and works have a tendency to linger in our memory for a long time as they slowly unfold. His poems are an archive of moments that poignantly capture the way it feels to live at this moment in time. They articulate, reprehend and simultaneously celebrate our shared experience of modern life.’

Those words ring just as true today as they did two years ago, and needless to say, we’re thrilled that we can make two of Robert’s poems available in their original billboard format – only here and now, from us to you.

All our best,
mono.kultur

Just in case that you are still in dire need of last minute Christmas presents, here are some suggestions where we might be able to help with our nifty little gift list for all wallet sizes – order this week though to insure timely delivery. And yes, we do allow for gift orders to be shipped directly to your lucky recipient.

XS / Single Back Issues of mono.kultur
The perfect little give away for someone you like but where larger gifts are inappropriate – single issues of mono.kultur are still available from us, covering all tastes and inclinations, from the serious (Manfred Eicher) to the silly (Bless), the hands-on (Ryan McGinley) to the thoughtful (Chris Ware).

S / mono.editionen #02: Miranda July
Miranda July seems to not be able to do any wrong, and certainly not where our hugely popular edition of three screen-printed posters is concerned – for Oliver, Sophie and everyone else.

M / mono.kultur Subscription
Subscriptions are the perfect gift we find, since what is more fun than having a gift arrive at your door not only once, but four times a year? Remind them again and again who thought of it first back in 2012.

L / mono.log #01: Robert Montgomery
Literally large in size (A2!), our first artist book ever still smells of ink it’s so fresh off the press, and contains plenty of food for thought to come back to again and again in 2013.

XL / mono.archiv #02
Okay, now we’re really talking, since 15 issues of mono.kultur with more than 500 pages of conversational quality all contained in one lovely box is well and truly a generous gift that will keep your lucky recipient busy over the holidays and beyond.

See, it’s been years ago that we produced our first set of mono.editionen, and in a way, you can blame it on Shrigley that we thought it might be a good idea to continue. And so for years, we reprinted and reprinted those bags, hundreds and hundreds of them, carrying them with us from fair to fair, packing box after box.

But all good things come to an end, and to be honest, we’re a little tired now of leapfrogging and sunshining, even though there is something to be said for seeing young hipsters in Paris carrying a Shrigley bag, and not just any bag but our bag – the kind of thing that makes you want to run up to a stranger and hug them. Anyway, we need to clear some space for new and different totes, so with a sigh we declare free shipping on those last few handfuls of mono.editionen #01 with the lovely David Shrigley. One week, and one week only, after which we’ll have better things to do. And no, just in case you missed the point, we will not be reprinting anymore – don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Ideally, you get something that you both love, and everyone is happy. What you want, however, is loud and clear to us: you want Miranda July.

So here she is, with a glowing halo of kindness hovering around her curly mop of hair, offering three messages to you, and you alone. And with a slightly embarrassed grin on our faces, we throw in free shipping for our mono.editionen #02 with the wondrous Miranda July, for our third week under the spell of kindness.

We all know the feeling: You feel like the new year really just got started, summer as usual coming way too late before it’s already gone, and suddenly funny things like Lebkuchen or Spekulatius appear on the shelves in the supermarket, and you realize: Christmas is just around the corner. And before you know it you have to worry about presents for parents and nephews, and anyway, where did the year go?

That’s the moment where kindness comes in, because isn’t that what the season is supposed to be about, besides shopping of course? And because not everyone has lovely Miss Read around the corner to ease your Christmas worries, we said to ourselves, let us be kind and share.

So kindness, here it is: As of now, today, November 26, and for four weeks precisely (and yes, four weeks is all you have), we will cover shipping on one item of our choice in our online store mono.konsum. That’s right, those magic two words: Free Shipping. And to start this whole thing off on a good note, we thought we’d kick this off with our beloved mono.editionen #03, with Taryn Simon, since that one really is a treat. For one week, and one week only, before we move on to kindness number 02.

it’s been a while since we last published an edition, and it’s been just as long that we’ve been meaning to reprint that unexpectedly popular little gem of an issue mono.kultur #15 with Taryn Simon, which might still qualify as the issue to sell out the fastest so far. So when the occasion of Taryn Simon exhibiting her new series in Berlin forced us into a now or never-moment, we thought why not combine the two, and instead of simply reprinting the issue, why not extend it to the now with new material from A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters? Which is exactly what we did.

So here it comes: mono.editionen #03 with Taryn Simon. A pretty little package in those lovely photographers’ glassine envelopes, containing not only a reprint of our original issue #15 from 2008, which we might have already mentioned we feel to be a little jewel in magazine design; but also an interview addendum with Simon talking about her latest work A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters, as well as ten plates thereof, printed as a set of separate cards.

As you might be able to tell, we’re pretty pleased with ourselves that what started as a snappy idea on the spur of a moment turned out so awfully nice.

mono.editionen is available as of now from our nifty online store.

All our best,
