SPLENDID BENDING

osko-deichmann1In an industry that all too often seems to propagate gimmicky absurdities as groundbreaking ideas and superfluous objects as essential must-haves, it’s really refreshing to come across product design that is truly innovative in its sheer simplicity. The Berlin-based design duo Osko+Deichmann are currently showcasing their new range of ‘Kink Furniture’ at the gallery Helmrinderknecht – a series of objects that are functional, basic, beautiful. But they’re also clever: all items are constructed on the common basis of tubular steel – the difference being that the steel is not, as usual, industrially bent but manually folded, dented and kinked. And thus a deliberate mistake – dented tubular steel would normally immediately be discarded – not only generates the beautiful shape of the furniture, it also allows to shortcut a lengthy production process. It’s an idea so simple that one wonders why no one had thought of it before, and aren’t those ideas always the best: they make us see our surroundings in a new light. Feels like a classic in the making.
