ALTERNATIVES IN PRINT: LITTLE WHITE LIES

One of my favourite magazines out there at the moment is the UK based film magazine Little White Lies which has been around since 2005. Each issue of Little White Lies is themed around a single cover film, inspiring the design and editorial content of the entire issue.
On the cover they always feature an illustration [...]

BOOK WORKS

I’ve received seven invitations now by the artist Martin Zet to donate one of my zero copies of Thilo Sarrazin’s controversial bestseller, conveying some shady views on Muslim integration in Germany. It is the first official act of the Berlin Biennale coming up this summer, which promises to be an interesting one, curated as it [...]

MOTTO DISCO

Our friends at Motto had their third anniversary recently, and to commemorate the occasion, they have invited a group of artists and acquaintances to contribute to Motto Disco, in form and shape of playlists to be played at the store during opening hours. Listen to the first installment by Kuedo, aptly titled Sinking in the [...]

Nothing quite like a real book

The owners of Type bookstore in Toronto (call: + 416 366-8973) put their shelves to life. Is this a video response to Spike Jonze’s Mourir Auprès de Toi? Or an appendix to Anthony’s Bookshelf Porn?
Anyway, nice ad!

MONO.LUX #01: MONO.GRAMM A/W 2011

Everyone seems to be doing a fashion film these days, and we’ve been mostly pretty disappointed with what we’ve seen so far. But since complaining is one of our bad habits, we thought we’ll just make our own – as far away as possible from being a fashion film, of course. So here it is, [...]

RADIO TIMES

Think whatever you may about Tyler Brulé’s stunningly successful imprint Monocle – in terms of building a magazine as a brand with an integrated design agency and a whole roster of commercial collaborations under its belt, it’s become a prime example how it’s possible to combine a quality title with a commercial enterprise and still [...]

WHAT WE BELIEVE

There is a beautiful kind of manifesto in the first pages of the current issue of 032c, summing up their thoughts and ideas from over a decade of magazine-making, in the usual slightly heady style of 032c, of course. But it’s always refreshing when someone takes a stand, and a beautiful one at that.
And not [...]

GUGGENHEIM GEMS

Imprint’s August Heffner reports the exciting news that the Guggenheim has digitized a host of out-of-print catalogues. This is wonderful news: not only are these publications valuable scholarly resources, but together they form an inspirational treasure trove (no surprise, considering so many were designed by Herbert Matter). Look at that Klimt \<>/ Schiele cover!

INTERVIEWS WITH CHILDREN

Interview between Laura and her seven-year-old son Coen
Laura: You’re seven now. How is it being seven?
Coen: It’s okay. I liked being six more though.
L: Why?
C: I don’t know. It’s like Neverland in Peter Pan. What are you writing?
L: I’m typing what you say.
C: Huh?
L: It’s not a big deal. I’m just writing down what we [...]
