TRUISM OF THE DAY 07: SARAH BURTON

Obvious maybe, but so true nonetheless. The impressively humble fashion designer Sarah Burton, who took over the house of late Alexander McQueen to great acclaim, on McQueen’s legacy in US Interview – read more here. Weirdly, this is our post #1500, and here’s to you, Mrs Burton.

Lange Nacht der Designstudios

Berlin seems to be the ‘Lange Nacht der Something’ city… Museums, Opera, Books, and what else could be missing? That’s right, Design Studios, something that Berlin is very representative of. Therefore, on June 7th, between 19 and 23 pm, Berlin design studios will open also for the night shift! More than 58 design studios in town [...]

EXODUS NOW

Ursprung is the latest project of Stephan Abry (Workshop) and Hendrik Weber (aka Pantha du Prince). Their release is a mix of their own ‘Ursprung’: Krautrock, ambient, and minimalist guitar-sound á la Durutti Column- the guitar as the primary sound source. Those very influences melt into ten tracks produced by Tobias Levin.

“Just keep building it! Just keep building it!” (Thanks, Mr. Jaar!)

JAAR ESSENTIALS

In the meantime, on an entirely different musical planet, 22-year-old wunderkind Nicolas Jaar compiled his first ever contribution to BBC One’s essential Essential Mix, which is like a roller coaster ride through musical history, easily living up to last year’s benchmark essential mix by James Blake. Shigeru Umebayashi followed by *NSYNC, Jay-Z by Johny Greenwood? [...]

MONDAY MUSIC: LOWER DENS

In honour of tonight’s gig at West Germany in Berlin: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Baltimore’s Lower Dens.

STATE OF PALESTINE

Governmental documents serve the explicit correlation of identity and affiliation. Palestinian artist Khaled Jarrar uses these attributes as samples for alternative models of identity and anticipates the existence of a state, which until now is mere utopia. He created a passport stamp for the State of Palestine, challenging the Israeli border regime, which he stamps [...]

MAP OBSESSION

Our apologies for this one, but we really couldn’t help it… Maps, of course, are wonderful and highly addictive things, and we are sure that Mr David Rumsey is going to agree: having gathered more than 30,000 and counting fine historical examples of cartography in his rather mind-blowing collection. The histomap above is taken from [...]

HANNA LIDEN

In Hanna Liden’s Ghost Town, a wonderful new series of  photographs now on view at Maccarone, everything is covered with some kind of downtown detritus. Faces are masked in Have A Nice Day plastic bags, bodies clothed Canal Street Fuck You t-shirts, flowers painted Terrence Koh Black, classical busts etched with graffiti. Even the images [...]

MIKE MILLS PILLOWCASES

I want these new Mike Mills pillowcases which have just arrived in store with our friends at Third Drawer Down.
