TIP OF THE TONGUE

The legendary Glasgow-based record store Volanic Tongue is closing after ten years activity! Run by former Charalambides member Heather Leigh Murray and her husband and writer David Keenan, it was a very relevant place for experimental music. Specializing in new, second-hand & rare underground music and sub-cultural ephemera including books, magazines and DVDs. After closing the physical shop, in which they hold regular readings and performances, Volcanic Tongue functioned as an online mailorder site. The website was also an appreciable canal with its in-depth reviews of current underground, experimental, psychedelic and left-field releases. Have a look at their statement on the decision here and keep listening to their mixtapes!

MONDAY MUSIC: GOLDEN DISKÓ SHIP

Lo fi electronica and I really like the name: Golden Diskó Ship.

THE HEART OF THE NIGHT

More words of this casual genius are to be discovered in A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and embellished with a handful drawings by the man himself in: #25 / Dave Eggers: The Heart of the matter. Good night, sleep tight and don’t let Monday‘s bad bugs…

DIDION THE DOWNER

New face of Céline is the legendary writer Joan Didion… As a tribute to Didion, Vogue U.S. has re-published one of her essays on self-respect from the year 1961.

“…To such doubtful amulets had my self-respect been pinned, and I faced myself that day with the nonplussed wonder of someone who has come across a vampire and found no garlands of garlic at hand…”

JE SUIS CHARLIE

Over at It’s Nice That, they compiled a nice series of caricatures responding to the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in Paris – vicious as ever, and long live political satire. See more here.

Self-publishing with simple means is a common endeavor, and the less money is available, the greater the enthusiasm seems to be. But the distribution and perception of small print publications can quickly reach limits. The relevant know-how about the intricacies of book publishing is not something to be taken for granted. So Drucken Heften Laden will analyze and discuss the conditions and possibilities for independent publishing in the context of art and city (politics). The exhibition presents a temporary archive, with selected nGbK titles published since 1969 and contemporary books and journals. Running parallel to this is a three-day closed workshop, the themes and results of which will be integrated in the public series of events.

MONDAY MUSIC: FKA TWIGS

This isn’t new, of course, but in terms of music and visuals, FKA Twigs certainly was one of the highlights of 2014, with this particular commission for Dazed Digital staying in my mind.

BLOWING UP

Boston Bun “Time Bomb” from Lisa Paclet on Vimeo.

Hormonic fumbling and almost-missed connections punctuate the beats of Boston Bun’s “Time Bomb” in this luscious video. Director Lisa Paclet’s résumé includes Chanel, Dior, Kenzo, Y.S.L., so it’s not surprising that the film is all high style. Each shot is immaculately designed, from the crisp sporty outfits to the sensuous choreography and candy colors.
