15 MINUTE PORTRAITS

Ah what the hell, why not – here are some more or less recent portraits for various publications from the mono.graphie department.

Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton / 2009 / Editorial / Published in mono.kultur [Cover] / Berlin

The thoroughly wonderful Tilda Swinton is hardly in need of an introduction. The Scottish actress seems equally comfortable appearing in mainstream Hollywood productions and on the covers of glossy women’s magazines as she does headlining independent low-budget films or lending her name to a variety of goodwill projects – all without losing one ounce of her fiercely independent spirit and credibility.

Moritz von Oswald

Moritz von Oswald / 2009 / Editorial / Published in The Wire [Cover] / London

Few producers have had such an impact on the sound of techno as Moritz von Oswald, better known as Maurizio. Co-founder of the short-lived but highly influential techno label Basic Channel in the 1990s, as well as the ensuing imprints Chain Reaction and Rhythm and Sound, von Oswald has forged a sound that took electronic music beyond the dancefloor, into adulthood.

moderat

Moderat / 2009 / Editorial / Published in Groove [Cover] / Berlin

Moderat are an unlikely but highly rewarding match in Berlin’s electronic scene: one third Apparat, two thirds Modeselektor, Moderat fuse the melodic and melancholic pop of the former with the head-on stomping beats of the latter. The results are, well, slightly melancholic but always head-on.

thomas-demand

Thomas Demand / 2008 / Editorial / Published in Style & The Family Tunes / Berlin

When Thomas Demand was given the first exhibition at a newly renovated MoMA in New York, it was clear that Demand had quietly become one of the most important artists today. His work consists predominantly of photographs of spaces that have been elaborately rebuilt out of paper, creating an unsettling effect of artificial reality.

dries-van-noten

Dries van Noten / 2009 / Editorial / Published in mono.kultur / Berlin

In his quiet ways, Dries van Noten has established himself as one of the most respected and influential fashion designers in the world. In a highly globalised industry that is all too often more concerned with image rather than quality, the notoriously media-shy but truly charming Belgian has gained praise not only for his unique sense for colours, fabrics and the combination of modern elegance with traditional craft, but also for his uncompromising and personal approach.
