THE FOURTH PLINTH

fourth_plinthBritish artist Antony Gormley was commissioned to create an art work for the famous ‘Fourth Plinth’ on Trafalgar Square in London, which was built in 1841 to display an equestrian statue before the funds ran out, leaving it empty ever since. Since 1998, various artists such as Rachel Whiteread or Thomas Schütte have been commissioned to create temporary art works for the site. In true British fashion, Antony Gormley turned for his scultpure One & Other the empty plinth for 100 days into a live art work by inviting people to participate and occupy the plinth for one hour at a time, with the freedom to do and say whatever they like. You can follow the activities on the plinth day and night at a livestream here.
