Many of our international subscribers will find the new mono.issue in their mailbox these days. Without telling too much about the inside of the envelope, a remark on its outside: We were quite happy to notice wisdom doesn’t stop in fortune cookies, the €1-stamps quote low-German poet Fritz Reuter:
‘Wenn einer dauhn deit, wat hei deiht, denn kann hei nich mihr dauhn, as hei deiht.’
It’s not easy to translate to any sane tongue, but the stamp suggests something like: If one really does what he is doing, then he can do no more than he does. We’re not sure, but Fritz Reuter may have been the very first slacker.
And yes, it’s true. Even high-ranking officials feel it’s a big deal.

I just received an envelope from a friend in Germany with this stamp. I had never heard of Fritz Reuter (and I am reasonably well-read) and now have a new European author to explore. Thank you for the translation. German stamps usually much better than those of the USA.
