The Dutch have a reputation for excellent design and a highly sophisticated visual culture – so it’s a strange twist that decent art bookstores seem to be rather rare in the nether lands. However, things are looking up, certainly in Rotterdam with the opening of PrintRoom last year. A non-profit initiative dedicated to artists’ books and multiples, PrintRoom has been promoting independent art publishing on fairs and exhibitions since 2003, before finally opening a permanent home in Rotterdam where they organise lectures, exhibitions and events revolving around art publishing. So when will we see similar spaces appear in Amsterdam or Den Hague?
