STORE OF THE MONTH: PROJECT NO.8 / NEW YORK

We’ve been wanting to mention Project No. 8 for some time now, so happy were we when they asked to stock mono.kultur, but what better time than now that they’re even gracing the back cover of our current issue.

For anyone in New York with a vague interest in fashion, Project No. 8 is something of a household name, given that it’s arguably one of if not the best store for avant-garde designer fashion in New York. Or should we say stores, since in fact there are now three Project No. 8’s, the original and beautiful and tiny space in Chinatown, as well as the more recent and beautiful and slightly larger space for menswear on the Lower East Side, as well as the even more recent addition on the premises of the hyped Ace Hotel, stocking predictably a range of travel accessories and magazines and mono.kulturs and such.

What makes Project No. 8 special is, as always, a personal touch – one can feel some sort of a vision behind the range of labels and items in store, or what’s more, you get the impression the owners would happily wear each item personally. There is a certain curiosity and obvious joy in finding obscure items or new designers that is palpable and infectious, as it should – and indeed, Project No. 8 has its name for a reason, as there have been other projects before, including the gallery Arratia, Beer in Berlin, and presumably there will be more to come.
