TUESDAY MUSIC: NILS FRAHM

I photographed Berlin-based label Erased Tapes last week, which is a fine example of an independent record label in the 21st century. Consistently carving out their niche between electronica and classical and ambient music for five years, it’s a wholesome approach to music: production, packaging, videos – everything is produced with equal love for detail and works together as a consistent whole. Why would one start a record label in the midst of an ongoing midlife crisis for the record industry? ‘It’s perfectly possible,’ label founder Robert told me, ‘no complaints from my side. But I guess we haven’t known it any other way.’ I suppose it was a silly question from someone who started a magazine in the middle of ongoing predictions about the end of print.
