ECHOES OF VOICES IN THE HIGH TOWERS

We mentioned Robert Montgomery before, and we are bound to be mentioning him again since we like his work so much, so we are really excited that his biggest project to date will be opening in Berlin tomorrow evening, in the beautiful park of the former air strip of Tempelhof airport – Tempelhofer Freiheit, as it is aptly called now.

Echoes of Voices in the High Towers will expand on Montgomery’s signature style of infusing text messages into the public realm, with several light installations that make use of the reverse of old signposts that were previously used for the airport, as well as 20 billboards that have been and will continue to be going up around Berlin, interrupting the relentless onslaught of advertising with short strands of political poetry.

In terms of content, Echoes of Voices in the High Towers picks up on Berlin’s layered and troubled history and distils a sense of cautious hope from the rubble of the past. The project is curated by the independent arts initiative Neue Berliner Räume, more on whom at some other point, but congratulations to them for pulling off such a spectacular project. More to follow, but in the meantime, we will see you at Tempelhofer Freiheit tomorrow.
