STORE OF THE MONTH: KUBRICK / HONG KONG

The idea of the good old cinemathèque feels very last century, and yet, maybe they are the last fortress of cinema to resist the dominance of super hero boredom on screen. Even more importantly for a city like Hong Kong, where one can count the number of outlets for independent culture on one hand. So god bless the Broadway Cinemathèque with its impeccable programming, slapped right in the middle of a housing project in the bustling and poor Kowloon district of Yau Ma Tei. Right next door you can find Kubrick, a beautiful café cum bookstore, which is maybe the only place where you can browse some great independents like McSweeney’s, Fire & Knives or mono.kultur, for that matter. It’s a great place to get lost in for a few hours, coffee in hand, and what more could you ask for from a great bookstore.
