ALTERNATIVES IN PRINT: THE HAPPY READER

Of course, only the minds behind titles like Fantastic Man or Gentlewoman could come up with a name like The Happy Reader – their latest addition to a growing roster of magazines, this time in collaboration with the venerable house of Penguin.

It’s the formula of Fantastic Man – a chatty sense of irony, impeccable design, a personal touch and most importantly, heaps of casual charme – applied to that most gentlemanly activity of all: reading. Literature magazines are generally not the most entertaining genre, so it might well be that The Happy Reader will do for literary reviews what Fantastic Man did for fashion magazines: lighten up the genre without taking it and itself all that seriously.
