OH, WOW

Our House West Of Wynwood (OHWOW) started as “the first and last place you go each night” during Art Basel Miami Beach in 2008. While  Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran started it as a home away from home for the New York Downtown Scene during their forays into the glitz of Miami, OHWOW has begun to put on its engaging, if scene-y, shows up North. Currently on view are the intricate, mesmerizing skulls, eagles, and broken hearts the tattooist Scott Campbell has sculpted out of layered dollar bills.

More exciting, though, is the hidden bookshop OHWOW has just opened in Greenwich Village. The OHWOW Book Club, as they call it, is designed by the same savant who fashioned their Miami headquarters. For the New York space, Rafael de Cárdenas has combined the pastels of Miami Beach with the black and white tiles of pre-war New York bathrooms, creating the perfect home away from home away from home. The store carries some great documents of New York’s creative community below 14th St., including Clayton Patterson’s Front Door Book, which documents the colorful characters that hung outside the underground filmmaker’s Lower East Side building in the 80s and 90s.
