BICYCLE PORTRAITS

My memories of traveling around South Africa are mostly of sitting in the ubiquitous kombi taxis: vans that stop for every potential customer until they are packed far beyond any legal limit. Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler’s forthcoming book ‘Bicycle Portraits‘ focuses on South Africans who eschew cramped quarters and blaring sound systems in favor of wind and pedal power. Their photographs and the accompanying interviews focus on how bicycling fits into the everyday life of South Africa. The best kind of artistic enterprise, Engelbrecht and Grobler’s project ‘is as much an investigation into South African bicycle culture as it is an excuse for them to ride their bikes and take photographs.’ How I wish I could hop on a bike and ride over to the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane for Thursday’s match between France and Mexico. Allez les Bleus!
