INTERVIEW

Hans Ulrich Obrist’s questioning impulse borders on the obsessive; he has staged marathon interview sessions, and he has published innumerable volumes devoted to his talks with artists. While this might lead to replicated questions and rote answers, Obrist’s close relationship with certain artists has born incredibly satisfying fruit. Published as volume 6 in his ‘Conversation Series,’ Obrist’s interview with Wolfgang Tillmans reads like a snippet of a conversation that started long ago and never really stopped.

While most of Obrist’s question/answer sessions end in published text, his new book Interview is much more an artistic collaboration. Obrist and Hans-Peter Feldmann have known each other for a long time, and have often talked about doing an interview together. The final product is a direct outgrowth of Feldmann’s artistic practice; Obrist posed questions in writing, and Feldmann responded with a single image. The artist has always worked with and through the detritus of visual culture, producing archives of advertising imagery and typologies of the banal everyday. Interview highlights the expression of Feldmann’s theoretical impulse in everyday practice.
