PUBLISHING ROUNDTABLE #04: IL PARADISO

Joining us at the last minute for tomorrow evening’s publishing roundtable is another worthy Berlin project that goes by Il Paradiso. Published annually every spring, it comes just in time for planning your summer travels – which is just as well, with Il Paradiso dedicating each issue to one country and with summer very much in mind. And yet, Il Paradiso doesn’t really compare to your average travel magazine, but is more of a very personal portrait of a place, picking out people, customs and national curiosities in such a charming, mouthwatering style that it makes you immediately want to pack your bags and rediscover Italy, France, or currently Sweden. Published by photography consulting studio Andreas Wellnitz, Il Paradiso is, needless to say, perfectly executed and carries a lightness and effortlessness throughout its pages that work their magic well beyond summer.

PUBLISHING ROUNDTABLE #03: FLANEUR

Flaneur magazine came out of nowhere (Berlin, that is) and turned out to be one of the great editorial surprises in recent years, and very successfully so. Their concept is downright minimalistic: every issue explores not just a city, but a specific street within a city – from Kantstrasse in Berlin for their debut issue in 2013, to Fokionos Negri in Athens for their about to be released fifth offering, passing through Leipzig, Montréal and Rome inbetween. A street is not just a street, of course, but a container for life and lives – and so, paradoxically, Flaneur really is about everything and anything: history, work, housing, time, love… If anything, Flaneur feels, exactly as their name promises, like a slow and meandering walk through daily life, with your attention resting here and there and nowhere in particular, pasting together fleeting moments that somehow make up for a meaningful, chaotic whole.

PUBLISHING ROUNDTABLE #02: CEE CEE

Berliners who have any interest whatsoever in what’s going in our favourite city will be no strangers to Cee Cee – the weekly newsletter offering a handpicked selection of things to do and see, from bars and restaurants to events and hidden gems and curiosities. Initially started by journalist Nina Trippel and graphic designer Sven Hausherr as a little favour to their friends and acquaintances, Cee Cee’s formula proved instantly addictive and effective: within only a few years, it has grown into the most widely read newsletter on Berlin. Not surprisingly, they compiled the best of their findings into the ultimate guide / coffeetable book on Berlin last year, merging print and digital with grace. But most importantly: despite their large following, Cee Cee have maintained their personal tone and charme, and we’re so utterly pleased that they will join us this Friday for our roundtable talk on independent publishing.

PUBLISHING ROUNDTABLE #01: BERLIN QUARTERLY

We’ve gathered some of the finest magazine projects to come out of Berlin during the past ten years for a casual talk on independent publishing this Friday, which we’ll introduce in a little more detail over the next few days.

Berlin Quarterly we mentioned before, and we’re happy to mention them again – more of an annual than a quarterly, really, they have a broader world view than most independent magazines, compiling a selection of long form journalism, poetry, fine art and fiction that is as political as it is personal. While based in the heart of Europe, the Quarterly’s focus is on the edges of Europe – Belgrade, Norway and now Beirut have provided loose central points of their three issues to date. Placing themselves in the tradition of venerable general interest literary publications, in terms of content as well as graphics, it is an entirely unforced and charming update of what that slightly outdated genre could represent in the 21st century. Highly recommended, and we’re proud to welcome their publisher James Guerin this Friday at our roundtable talk.

MONO.KLUB #48: 10 YEARS MONO.KULTUR / PART 02

Dear Friends,

talk is nice and good, and when we will have satisfied our minds with our roundtable discussion with likeminded publishing projects, it is time to take care of the body at our 10th anniversary bash this coming Friday, 02. October 2015, at Acud Macht Neu.

Moving downstairs into Acud’s club & bar, we’ve invited three of Berlin’s most promising Djs who are all set for great things to join us for our anniversary party. Starting at 21h, DJs Snow (of Golden Pudel Club), Grayson Revoir and Stephanie Comilang will share their musical tastes and talents in a triple set into the wee hours, ranging all the way from disco via house to hip hop and back again.

Again, we will talk a little more about each during the next few days, or simply join us for our birthday bonanza this Friday night, and this one is on us: entrance is free. You’re welcome.

MONO.KLUB #48: 10 YEARS MONO.KULTUR / PART 01

Dear Friends,

as we mentioned before, we have the dubious pleasure of inviting you to our 10th (let’s just say that again: tenth!) anniversary bash this coming Friday, 02. October 2015, at Acud Macht Neu. We’ve been doing our best to put together some entertainment for body and mind as the occasion demands, and it’s time to fill in some of the details.

To start off the evening in sophistication, we invite you join us for a casual roundtable discussion with some of our favourite independent publishing projects, online and print, to come out of Berlin during the last decade. We’re utterly pleased that our friends at Berlin Quarterly, Cee Cee, Flaneur, Il Paradiso and Uncube all graciously accepted our invitation to share their editorial wisdom and experiences on the highs and lows of independent publishing.

We will introduce all the magazine projects during the next few days in a little more detail, or simply come and join us on Friday night for our anniversary event. The talk starts at 19h and, even better, is entirely free of charge.

NET-ROMANTICS

Keep a Secret by George Clanton (formerly Mirror Kisses) never stops to just please but pleasures. Lush vaporwave-ish synths and whistles frame Clanton’s decidedly sad-boy wails, and it works without sounding too retro. Here’s to velvety electropop you can dream to.

IF IN LONDON…

This week’s recommendations are two events taking place in South London, both highlighting the work and music of producer Terre Thaemlitz aka DJ Sprinkles. Café OTO presents an evening of talk, video and audio with Thaemlitz, starting with a multi-media reading of “Naisho Wave Manifesto” (“Secrecy Wave Manifesto”), which Thaemlitz produced for the first issue of the Japanese culture journal Farben, released in June 2014. Thaemlitz discusses – as she did in the current mono.kultur #39 – the historic and strategic deployment of silence and closets. In particular, she addresses the problematic repercussions of the online digital distribution of critical cultural work, and demonstrates how the logic of hegemonic Internet platforms runs counter to the social dynamics of minor communities and subcultures. This will be followed by discussion with the audience. The evening will continue with Thaemlitz mixing a variety of ambient audio, video and conversation.

On Friday September 25th, Tief and NTS Radio will co-host a Beats in Space showcase in Peckham. DJ Sprinkles has been given the headline slot along Matt Karmil, Hesseltime and Tim Sweeney among others.

What more can we ask for?

NUMBER ELEVEN: CYPRIEN GAILLARD

The upcoming exhibition NUMBER ELEVEN: CYPRIEN GAILLARD at JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION in Düsseldorf is dedicated to French artist Cyprien Gaillard (born 1980 in Paris, lives and works in Berlin), and will open this Friday, September 25, at 7 pm.

About the exhibition (from the website):
“In his artistic practice, Cyprien Gaillard examines buildings and living environments like a chronicler of our times. His works destabilize traditional notions that characterize the monuments in question. Following the example of Land Art and the Situationist International, Cyprien Gaillard leaves his studio in order to visit the so-called “ruins of Modernism”.
His video and film works orbit the myths surrounding these places and point to the complexity of a natural process of decay. His works demonstrate how society appropriates and interacts with architectural legacies or landscapes. They reveal the discrepancies between utopian architectural complexes and lived realities, as well as the social excesses that have often caused these utopian ideals to fail.

The comprehensive presentation at JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION focuses on the artist’s media-based work, which will be presented on this scale for the first time. The spectrum of works ranges from the artist’s early pieces from the 2000s to his current monumental 3D film Nightlife, released in 2015, which will be presented in collaboration with Kunststiftung Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen at the Grabbehalle at K20 from 29 January until 20 March 2016.

There is no better way to prepare for this exhibition then reading our interview with Cyprien Gaillard (“Dust Lines”, mono.kultur #24, 2010), which is still available in our online shop. Cyprien Gaillard about the issue: “This will age well, which is not easy these days. Thanks so much.”

THE LITTLE THINGS

Every moment is worth capturing, according to Martin Adolfsson, Daniel J Wilson, and Kevin Siwoff’s smartphone project minutiae. You download an app that notifies all participants  several times a day simultaneously for 3.9 years. Once you get the notification, you take a photo of something around you at the moment–or not. An pithy metonymy of internet culture, minutiae captures the tension between the addictive demands of mobile media and obsessive documentation. The team will release limited archives of all photos taken from the app at the projects’ end, which fittingly are on pre-sale.
